Travel Insurance Checklist: 10 Things to Check

Travel Insurance Checklist: 10 Things to Check

Choosing travel insurance can feel complicated, but it doesn’t have to be. Use this checklist to make sure your policy covers everything you need before you buy. Check off each item to ensure a worry-free trip.

1. Trip cancellation and interruption coverage

Does your policy protect you if you need to cancel or cut short your trip due to illness, injury, death of a family member, or other unforeseen circumstances? Verify the covered reasons and reimbursement limits. If you want maximum flexibility, ask about Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) coverage.

2. Medical coverage

Does the policy cover emergency medical expenses abroad, including hospital stays, doctor visits, prescriptions, and air ambulance? Check the coverage limits - a serious medical emergency abroad can easily cost $50,000 or more. Make sure the limits are adequate for your destination.

3. Baggage coverage

Are you covered for lost, stolen, or damaged luggage? Check the per-item and total limits. If you’re traveling with expensive equipment, you may need additional coverage for high-value items.

4. Travel delay coverage

If your flight is delayed or cancelled, does your policy cover additional accommodation, meals, and rebooking costs? Check the minimum delay time required to trigger coverage and the daily and total limits.

5. Emergency assistance

Does the policy include 24-hour emergency support? When something goes wrong abroad, you need someone who can help immediately - coordinating medical care, arranging evacuation, or replacing lost documents. Sitata provides 24/7 multilingual chat assistance with every plan.

6. Pre-existing medical conditions

If you have a pre-existing medical condition, is it covered? Many policies exclude pre-existing conditions unless you purchase a waiver within a specific time frame after booking. Always disclose your conditions honestly - failing to do so can void your entire policy.

7. Adventure sports coverage

Are you planning activities like skiing, diving, trekking, or surfing? Standard policies often exclude high-risk activities. Check whether your planned activities are covered, or if you need an adventure sports add-on.

8. Destination coverage

Does your policy cover every country you plan to visit, including layover destinations? Some policies exclude certain countries or regions. Verify before you buy, especially if traveling to areas with government travel advisories.

9. Policy limits and deductibles

What are the maximum payout limits for each benefit? What deductible or excess amount will you need to pay out of pocket before coverage kicks in? Make sure the limits are adequate for your trip value and the deductibles are affordable.

10. Read the fine print

Before purchasing, carefully read the policy terms, conditions, exclusions, and limitations. Pay special attention to what is NOT covered. If anything is unclear, contact the insurer to clarify before you buy.
