The Bailiwick of Jersey, or Jersey for short, is a British crown dependency located in the English Channel only 22km northwest of France. Formerly known as the Norman Isles, the Bailiwick of Jersey is composed of the main island of Jersey and a group of smaller, uninhabited islands. As a British crown dependency, the territory forms part of the British Isles but not part of the UK; the Bailiwick of Jersey is essentially independent but relies on the British government for military protection and international representation. The chief of state is the King/Queen of England and the head of government is the chief minister.
The population of Jersey was estimated to be approximately 98,840 people in 2017. Jersey has a small but prosperous economy and is a popular offshore financial center. Banking, tourism and farming are important economic sectors. Jersey cows, originating on the island and known internationally, are the foundation of the island’s dairy industry, an important economic contributor.
Due to its location, the island experiences a temperate climate and largely overcast skies. With fantastic scenery, rolling hills, sandy beaches, a National Park and moderate temperatures year-round, outdoor activities such as kayaking, golfing, hiking and cycling can be enjoyed by all on Jersey Island. The island is accessible by air or by ferry and has been a long time tourist destination for visitors from the UK.
