Dengue fever in Caribbean tourist destinations

Dengue fever occurs throughout the Caribbean islands, including tourist destinations in the Dominican Republic (5,220 cases and 57 deaths), Puerto Rico, the US and British Virgin Islands, Barbados, Cayman Islands, French Guiana, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Jamaica, Martinique, St Barthelemy, St Lucia, and St Martin.

Advice

All travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
