Dengue fever cases reported in Ecuador

For the first 3 months of 2013, there were 3,918 reported cases of dengue fever with 5 deaths. Most of the cases occurred in Manabí, Guayas, Los Ríos, Esmeraldas, Orellana, Sucumbíos, and Pichincha Provinces.

There may be many more unreported cases sincecounting and reporting may be hampered by lack of local access to health care,and many persons with mild illness may not seek health care. Travellers to areaswhere the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure todengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquitobites.
