Travellers rarely experience safety and security problems in Austria, however, petty crime, such as pickpocketing, is common in tourist areas and crowded places like transportation hubs and tourist sites. Be alert in your surroundings, and ensure that your personal belongings, valuables, and travel documents are kept secure at all times. Theft on international trains travelling to and from Austria has increased. Keep luggage within sight.
Travellers planning on high-altitude mountaineering and ski trips should be aware that avalanches after snowfalls do occur and people have died in avalanches. The weather in alpine environments can be unpredictable. Travellers wishing to participate in high-altitude mountaineering or skiing should ensure that mountain rescue and evacuation are included in their travel insurance coverage. It is strongly recommended to hire a professional guide, to avoid hiking alone and to not leave established trails.
