Situația

On 26 October 2024, Israel launched a major retaliatory strike on Iran, marking a critical escalation in regional tensions in the Middle East. This attack, termed “Days of Reckoning” by Israeli officials, involved multiple waves of airstrikes targeting military sites in Iran, Iraq, and Syria. The strikes are reportedly aimed at Iran’s missile production facilities, missile systems, and air defence capabilities. At least four Iranian soldiers were killed during the strikes.

The strikes were authorized following a late-night Israeli cabinet meeting led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, with a direct warning sent to Tehran cautioning against retaliation. The Israeli Defence Forces have confirmed that all aircraft involved have since returned to Israel.

What Has Led to the Current Situation?

The attack comes as a retaliation to Iran’s earlier missile strike on Israel on 1 October 2024, when Iran launched over 200 missiles towards Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Israel’s latest retaliatory strike appears to be a strategic move against Iran and its affiliates in the region, in an attempt to neutralize military capabilities that could support future offensives.

Areas Affected by the Attack

The strikes targeted several strategic locations in Iran, including Tehran, and extended into the provinces of Ilam and Khuzestan. Additional airstrikes were reported in central and southern Syria as well as in Basra, Iraq, where explosions were detected across the Iran-Iraq border. Iran briefly halted flights at key airports during the attacks but resumed operations after confirming that the strikes had concluded.

International Reactions and Security Implications

The attack has prompted global condemnation, with calls for restraint from the international community. The US confirmed that it was not involved in the strikes but maintained contact with Israeli officials throughout the operation. The White House has called for calm amid fears of a broader regional conflict if Iran retaliates. Tehran has responded defiantly, vowing to defend itself and reaffirming its support for resistance movements in Gaza and Lebanon.

Heightened Security Measures in Israel

The increased tensions have led to expanded security measures within Israel, particularly around military and strategic infrastructure in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and southern Israel. Enhanced air defences, including the Terminal High-Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) system and other air defence systems, are operational to mitigate potential Iranian counterstrikes. Authorities have imposed strict security checks at transit points, with increased roadblocks and surveillance in high-risk areas.

Is It Safe to Travel to Israel Now?

Due to the elevated security risk and potential for further missile strikes or retaliatory attacks, it is advisable to avoid all non-essential travel to Israel and neighbouring regions. Expect delays at airports due to heightened security screenings and possible airspace restrictions in response to the changing security situation.

Măsuri de siguranță pentru călători

  • Avoid travelling to central and southern areas near airbases and military installations, including Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, that are at a higher risk of missile strikes.
  • Ensure access to local news, air raid alerts, and official travel advisories. Follow the advice of local authorities and stay informed about the security situation in real time.
  • Identify safe zones and bomb shelters nearby, especially if travelling to high-risk areas. Sirens may provide only minutes of warning, so it’s crucial to know where to seek protection.
  • Public transport and roads may be disrupted due to air raid alerts or military activity, particularly in southern regions. Plan alternative routes and allow extra time for travel.

The travel risk to Israel remains high due to the ongoing conflict, with potential for widespread instability across the Middle East. Travellers are advised to consider postponing travel until the situation stabilizes.
