COVID-19 Precautionary Measures in Ghana (12 December Update)

Can a resident enter the country?

  • Yes

  • Residents are allowed to enter.

Can a foreigner enter the country?

  • Yes

  • Foreign nationals are allowed to enter Ghana.

Is transit allowed through the country?

  • Yes

  • Transit through Ghana is allowed. Passengers transiting through Ghana are not required to undergo a COVID-19 test if connecting on the next day.

Is a test required on arrival?

  • Yes with exceptions

  • Travellers must not have a high body temperature or any symptoms of COVID-19.

  • All arriving travellers, including those in transit, will undergo an antigen fluorescent immunoassay test for COVID-19 at the airport at their own expense. Before boarding any flight for Ghana, travellers must pay the test fee online, using this link.

  • Passengers between the age of five to twelve years are exempted from the test charges.

  • Test results should be available within 30 minutes and can also be checked online at this link. Passengers with negative results will be allowed to enter Ghana without any quarantine measures. Depending on the test result, some passengers may be required to quarantine in a government facility at their own expense.

  • Exemptions are:

  • Children below five years of age are exempted from the test requirements.

  • Anyone arriving in emergency circumstances will not be required to undergo testing on a condition that they will not leave the airport.

  • Passengers transiting and transferring through Ghana (Accra) with a connecting flight on the same day and without leaving the transiting area of airport or hotel.

  • Travellers (nationals and residents) returning within one week with a negative PCR test result issued during their departure from Ghana are exempted from test on arrival.

  • Departing passengers will undergo COVID-19 screening along with temperature checks.

Is a test certificate allowed?

  • Yes

  • A negative certificate from an accredited laboratory in the country of origin is allowed.

Test certificate required?

  • Yes with exceptions

  • Passengers older than five years of age arriving by air are required to have a negative COVID-19 PCR test report issued not more than 72 hours before departure. For passengers who have transited other countries before arriving in Ghana, the first country of departure will be the reference point.

  • Travellers departing from Ghana and returning within a week will not be required to carry any negative COVID-19 test result, as the test result during the departure from Ghana will be sufficient.

Is quarantine required on arrival?

  • No with exceptions

  • All arriving travellers, including those in transit, will undergo another COVID-19 test at the airport. Depending on the test result, some passengers may be required to quarantine in a government facility at their own expense.

Insurance required?

  • No

  • Ghana government advises travellers to carry valid insurance.

Entry form required?

  • Yes

  • Passengers must complete an online health declaration form before departure. Passengers may be required to complete another hard copy self-declaration form on the flight.

Airline restrictions

  • Minimal

  • International commercial flights are allowed to operate. The Kotoka International Airport has reopened.

  • Domestic flights are allowed to operate.

  • Emirates, Ethiopian, Qatar Airways, Turkish and Asky airlines are operational.

  • Asky Airlines have resumed Accra-Lomé-Johannesburg flight service.

  • United Airlines will resume services in Ghana from 2021.

  • On arrival or departure, all passengers must wear a face mask and undergo temperature screening.

  • The face mask must be worn appropriately, extending from the middle of the nasal bridge to halfway between the chin and the neck.

Border restrictions

  • Moderate

  • Land and maritime borders are closed.

  • Ghana has not granted any visa exemptions or extensions for visitors during the pandemic. Travellers will need to visit the Ghana Immigration Service office in person. It is not possible to call about an individual case or to book an appointment in advance. Office opening hours are from 08:00 to 17:00.

  • UK Emergency Travel Documents (ETDs) are allowed for exit only. Entry to and transit through Ghana is not possible using the ETDs.

Curfew restrictions

  • Minimal

  • No curfew or lockdown is in effect.

Social distancing restrictions

  • Moderate

  • Restrictions in terms of social distancing rules such as wearing face masks, closure of some public places, along with the land borders will remain in effect until at least 20 December.

  • People are advised to avoid shaking-hands with one another, wash hands and use hand sanitizers, and maintain social distancing norms.

Internal travel restrictions

  • Minimal

  • There are no restrictions on movement from one location to another.

  • Public transportation, including taxis and buses, are permitted to operate at full capacity.

Non-essential shops open?

  • Yes

  • Shops are open.

Accommodations open?

  • Yes

  • Hotels may open with proper compliance with social distancing rules.

Restaurants open?

  • Yes

  • Restaurants are allowed to open with proper social distancing protocol.

Bars and cafes open?

  • Yes with exceptions

  • Bars are allowed to open with outdoor arrangements. Indoor bars are closed.

Beaches and tourism sites open?

  • Yes with exceptions

  • Tourist sites are allowed to open with social distancing guidelines. Beaches will remain closed.

Museums and heritage sites open?

  • Yes

  • Museums and heritage sites are allowed to open with safety measures.

Personal care services open?

  • Yes

  • Barber shops are allowed to open.

Places of worship open?

  • Yes

  • Churches, other places of worship are open. Religious services are allowed to operate with full capacity for up to two hours per service.

Events allowed?

  • No with exceptions

  • Festivals, political rallies, and sporting events are prohibited until further notice. Conferences, weddings, workshops, and funerals are permitted up to a maximum of 100 persons.

  • Sports events, including football matches, are allowed to be played behind closed doors.

Masks required in public?

  • Yes

  • Wearing a face mask or covering is mandatory in public. “No mask, no entry” notices are displayed at public places such as shops, markets, banks, mall, pharmacies.

  • Violation of this restriction could lead to a fine or a prison sentence.

Other

  • Junior and senior high schools and universities have opened for final year students on a phased schedule. However, regular classes will not resume until at least January 2021.

  • Night clubs and cinemas are closed.

  • Open-air drinking establishment and national tourism sites are open.

The COVID-19 epidemic is constantly changing worldwide. This information is subject to change as the situation evolves. Travel and border restrictions may change with little or no notice.
