Yellow fever in Nigeria (summary)

So far in 2013, there have been 38 reported cases of yellow fever in Nigeria. The number of deaths is not reported. With the exception of Kano State where 12 cases occurred in one locality, most of the cases are isolated events spread across 10 other states. In these cases, the infections are usually acquired in forested areas from infected mosquitoes.

Travellers to areas where there is a risk of exposure to yellow fever can reduce that risk by obtaining a yellow fever vaccination before travelling. In addition, travellers should take all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Travellers are reminded that many other countries require proof of yellow fever vaccination upon arrival for all travelers equal to or greater than 9-12 months of age.
