The virus caused a serious form of pneumonia and acute respiratory distress, as well as mass panic and fear. The new virus was officially identified in 2003 as the <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/SARS_coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/SARS_coronavirus\">SARS coronavirus<\/a> (SARS-CoV). The SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) outbreak ended up causing around <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmedhealth\/PMH0004460\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmedhealth\/PMH0004460\/\">8,000 cases and 750 deaths worldwide<\/a>, and dramatically demonstrated both the frightening ease with which an infectious disease can spread across the globe, as well as the encouraging speed at which a connected global health system can respond to a new threat.<\/p>\n<p id=\"88ca\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--figure\">Fast-forward to today, and you may have seen the many recent media reports about a new SARS-like virus discovered in Saudi Arabia. So far, this new virus has <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/csr\/don\/2012_11_30\/en\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/csr\/don\/2012_11_30\/en\/index.html\">killed five people out of a total of nine cases of severe respiratory infection<\/a>\u200a\u2014\u200a5 cases in Saudi Arabia, 2 cases in Qatar, and 2 cases in Jordan. It has been identified as a new <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coronavirus\">coronavirus<\/a>, meaning it is genetically related to the SARS virus and thus, has caused some concern.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"9174\" class=\"graf graf--h4 graf-after--p\">The Situation So\u00a0Far<\/h4>\n<p id=\"3c8b\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h4\">Scientists are working to figure out where this new virus came from, whether it is very contagious and whether it, too, will spread widely like the SARS virus did. So far, it is known that the new virus is <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/ncv\/overview.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/ncv\/overview.html\">different from other coronaviruses<\/a> that have been found in humans before. It probably came from an animal and could be similar to coronaviruses found in<a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/health-20392050\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/health-20392050\"> bats<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"2083\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Fortunately, there\u2019s no need to panic!<\/p>\n<p id=\"71b4\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--figure\">Unlike the SARS virus, it currently seems <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/ncv\/overview.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/ncv\/overview.html\">unlikely that the novel coronavirus spreads easily from person to person<\/a>. Also, the WHO and CDC have not issued any travel warnings thus far, so you don\u2019t have to cancel any travel plans to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, or Jordan. However, if you have recently travelled to these countries and develop a fever, cough, and shortness of breath, it couldn\u2019t hurt to see your healthcare provider.<\/p>\n<p id=\"3ecf\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">The WHO headquarters and WHO Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office (EMRO) are currently <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/csr\/don\/2012_11_30\/en\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/csr\/don\/2012_11_30\/en\/index.html\">increasing epidemiological surveillance<\/a> and strengthening sentinel surveillance systems for severe acute respiratory infections to ensure this new coronavirus is sufficiently monitored.<\/p>\n<p id=\"0510\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p graf--trailing\">It seems unlikely that this new coronavirus will cause an outbreak and panic to the same extent as the 2003 SARS outbreak. Today, the global healthcare system is better prepared to deal with a mass outbreak of that kind. Scientists have already learned the new virus\u2019s genetic code, and labs around the world are already <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/world\/article\/1274934--new-sars-like-virus-discovered-before-it-causes-outbreak\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/world\/article\/1274934--new-sars-like-virus-discovered-before-it-causes-outbreak\">equipped to diagnose it<\/a>.
