Hepatitis A - street food vendors suspected as cause of hepatitis outbreak in Costa Rica

In one of the neighborhoods of San Jose, 47 students, most of whom are less than 12 years old, have been diagnosed with hepatitis A. Consuming food from street vendors is suspected as the principal cause of the outbreak.

Travellers should be aware that hepatitis A is preventable through vaccination. When there is a risk of exposure to hepatitis A virus, travellers can reduce this risk by exercising caution and avoiding consuming contaminated food and water, especially from street vendors.
